The story of El Moderno Concept Store began in . At that time, Delphine and I (David) lived a few meters away from what would become the store, on the same street, at number 39. Since 2012, we had been living in Malasaña, a neighborhood much appreciated by artists, students and night owls, which had become a magnet for tourism.
Delphine's family is half Belgian and half French, and when we went to visit her, we always stopped at design stores in Brussels or Paris (depending on where we went). On our travels, we always regretted that there were no similar stores in Madrid: places where craftsmanship and design, both local and international, were brought closer to people in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
Delphine had worked in visual merchandising for several fashion companies and always loved art. In addition to economics, she had studied art history. As for me, I studied Fine Arts and worked first as a designer, then as an art director. Before setting up El Moderno, I had created a company where we developed apps for children.
When my company went bankrupt and Delphine got fed up with her job, the idea that a store with a good selection of products that stood out for their design, quality and originality would be highly appreciated in Madrid gained momentum, and we decided to take the plunge.
We know that one of the main motivations to buy something is that it is beautiful, original, that it can be enjoyed over time and does not lose much of its value, that it is well designed or handcrafted with mastery. Being surrounded by beautiful things that inspire is not a matter of price, of being surrounded by luxury, it is a matter of style, of knowing how to combine, of attitude and of being up to date with trends.

The name El Moderno came about because one of the spaces we were considering for our future store was next to a store called La Antigua (The Old One) (in Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 45), a kind of Concept Store where you could find illustration, clothing and accessories with a vintage feel.
As our project was going to be more focused on a modern design, we thought it would be nice to call ourselves El Moderno (The Modern One), so people would remember our street as the place where La Antigua and El Moderno are located.
In the end, we didn't take the place next to La Antigua, but one a little further down, but the idea of the name stuck: El Moderno. What better name for a decoration, design and crafts store in the most alternative neighborhood of Madrid.

The space we now inhabit underwent a complete renovation to leave in sight the charm of its construction materials: stone, wood and brick, which accentuates the fact of being in a special place, with tradition. Particularly spectacular is the recovery the old brick vaulted coal cellar on the lower floor.
The four main categories of the store are decoration, stationery, accessories and jewelry, and graphic art.
We select among the best national and international brands so that, if you are thinking of giving yourself a treat, making a gift, buying a decorative object or a fashion accessory, you will find something that satisfies you and that you enjoy the process, in a beautiful store, with charm and an attractive and effective presentation and arrangement of products.
