With a design that dates back to the 1920s, it works with a twist mechanism that opens the chuck at the tip, pushing the 0.7 mm HB graphite lead forward; when the chuck is closed, it holds the graphite in place. An internal chamber contains multiple refills, which are automatically pushed in for use one at a time.
