Panther, by Brecht Evens, is a dark and haunting fable about childhood, loss, and the limits of the imagination.
It tells the story of Cristina, a young girl living with her father after her mother leaves, who is devastated when her cat falls ill and dies. Then a mysterious panther appears from the chest of drawers in her room to comfort her, tell her stories and accompany her to a fantastic world called Panterlandia. But what at first seems magical gradually turns into something increasingly disturbing.
In the words of the author, "Panther is a magical creature, or a demon, who comes to Cristina's room to comfort her for the loss of her cat (...). It is a strange combination of pleasure and discomfort. Pantera is a monster, like in fairy tales or in Maurice Sendak's "Where the Monsters Live".
With his distinctive watercolor style, Evens creates a visually dazzling and emotionally disturbing story. Panther was selected for the 2015 Angoulême International Comic Festival.
